Joan is the companion of a mad genius. This is a common trope. We see it a lot. The Doctor and his companions is one example. Other modern Sherlocks like BBC!Sherlock (with John) and House (with Wilson) are others.
And in basically every other case of this I've seen, the companion character is in awe of and/or emotionally dependant on the genius character (looking at you for the latter, Wilson. Looking at you so hard). To differing degrees, and those companion characters are often also awesome, and sometimes call their genius out on stuff and ground him and all that. But in the end, they always seem to be following their genius around. He generally has the lion's share of the power in the relationship. That only really changes if the companion straight up leaves him. (You go Martha! Seriously, good choice.)
But Joan and Sherlock? They're different, because from the start Joan has the control. Literally, because of her job, but also emotionally, because she's not in awe of Sherlock. She's in awe of what he can do, yes. But not of him.
She comes to respect him, to believe in him, eventually to care for him. But she would never consider him above her, and honestly if either of them is emotionally dependant on the other it's him to her.
Yes, she stayed with him even when it was no longer her job, but she made that choice because she realized in a level headed way that doing what he does makes her happy. And it was a choice that took a lot of thought. Staying was the hard choice.
You can see the equality in every part of their interactions. Even when he is her teacher, they are equals. She is constantly questioning him, snarking on him, calling him out.
Plus, he is teaching her how to be an investigator. Fully, really teaching her. Not in a patronizing way, but as a genuine pupil he thinks has a lot of potential. And she sometimes makes connections or notices things he doesn't, especially in her area of expertise, and he acknowledges that. That alone is a huge shift from, say, the BBC!Sherlock/John dynamic. (And I actually LIKE them. But for other reasons.)
Why am I mentioning all of this?
Because it is so different, and refreshing, and AWESOME to see the genius be vulnerable one, and to have his companion be the one who is together, sure of herself, and ready and able to declare boundaries and tell her genius to fuck off he doesn't respect her.

So she's promised a grand tour of the universe and all its wonders but what the universal grand slam turns into is her facing shit like this.
x
Which she faces with a fabulous sense of humor and grace
x
She's treated as subhuman for months but knows that NO, these assholes are wrong. She is amazing and they don't get to take her joie de vivre from her.
x
Then, after the grand tour that wasn't she goes back home where she discovers that a being with basically god like powers wants to destroy her planet. Her family is imprisoned by this psycho, the man she is in love with, another being with basically god like powers is utterly defeated and she knows that if the Earth is to be saved she has to do it ALL ON HER OWN
These are the minions of the evil she's facing
x
So what does she do? She looks at the situation and goes. fuck it. I can do this.
x
The planet's been decimated and she has to defeat a being with almost magical powers. What's her only weapon? Her mind and sheer bloody determination. Can she do it. YES SHE CAN.
x
And in the end
x
All of these good points?

I really don't know who I want to win the second duel. My bracket says Joan, my mind thinks that it may be Martha's only chance to win it all and my heart says both.
I guess I'll just read the campaigns to help me choose or pick the one with the least votes at some point.
